Tubal block

The fallopian tubes are located  on either side of the uterus in the abdominal cavity. For a woman to conceive, the fallopian tubes transport the sperm from the uterus to the egg that has been released by the ovary during ovulation. It also helps with the transportation of the fertilised egg or embryo to the uterus for implantation. When there is a block in this transportation channel, it is called Tubal Block. Tubal blocks can affect either one or both the fallopian tubes in a woman.

Major Causes of Tubal Block:

  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Sexually transmitted infections
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Abdominal surgery

Consequences of Tubal Block

Tubal block is one of the common causes of infertility in women as the sperm cannot travel to the egg, or the fertilised egg cannot make its way to the uterus. Another complication with blocked fallopian tube is ectopic pregnancy. In ectopic pregnancy, the fertilised egg gets implanted in the blocked tube. This is not a viable pregnancy and is life-threatening for the mother.

Pregnancy with Tubal Block

It can be difficult to have a normal pregnancy with a tubal block but with the advancement in medical science, it is not impossible too. Depending on the extent to which the fallopian tubes are blocked, there are various treatment options available. Treatment can range from canulation of the tubes under guidance, surgical repair of the fallopian tubes to assisted reproductive techniques like IVF. Develop a healthy living  routine and review your condition with your doctor to see what works best for you.
