How can a woman with a weak uterus get pregnant?

The uterus is a hollow muscular organ situated between the bladder and pelvis in the female body. The eggs that the ovaries produce, travel through the fallopian tube, and, after fertilisation, implant themselves in the lining of the uterus, where it develops into a baby.

A weak uterus, also called the Uterine Prolapse, is caused when the pelvic muscles and ligaments weak and can no longer support the uterus.

It has been suggested that a prolapsed uterus can cause difficulty in getting pregnant. Previous pregnancy, advancing age with its change in hormones, can cause a prolapse of the uterus.

However, there have been cases where it has happened, but with careful assessment and with elective caesarean section as the safest mode of child delivery.

This was made possible with the application of a vaginal pessary.  This is a soft removable device that supports the area affected by the prolapse. These can be in the shape of a U, disk, ring or cube. The name is derived from the Greek word, pessarion.

In the cases referred here, it was inserted inside the pelvis after manual reposition. This was later removed during the 24th week. There has also been one case of in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer pregnancy.

Natural pregnancy, with a prolapsed uterus, is possible but highly risky. But, its management should be individualised based upon patient preference, age and severity of the prolapse.
While a vaginal delivery can be expected, a caesarean section is the safest option.
